I made them using Apophysis, and the most recent (Creation) with Apophysis 3D. So, I didn't actually write the math, but I did create / manipulate the triangles to adjust the input matrix. I also post-processed them a bit to get them closer to the final effect I wanted.

So, I guess it's about half-'n-half math and art. I'm not an experienced fractalist, but I am an experienced Graphic Designer / Photo Manipulator, so I see the rendered output as a starting point for the part I do well.
